Rim of the Valley Corridor

A Call to Action - Contact Your representatives!

In 2016, the National Park Service (NPS) released results from a six-year special resource study of the Rim of the Valley Corridor. They recommended more than doubling the size of the existing Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act expands the recreation area to include almost all the land recommended by the NPS study. This new expansion will be known as the Rim Of The Valley.

The Bill (introduced in the House and Senate) will mean that the NPS will have the authority to improve access to the land (e.g. trails, roads); study the wildlife; participate in conservation and recreation planning; coordinate programs with non-federal land management partners; provide technical assistance for protecting resources; contribute financially to programs that protect natural resources, and more.

The Santa Monica Mountains have thriving ecosystems and wildlife. As one of the five Mediterranean areas on the planet, it is vital to care for this area and allow federal organizations to oversee its protection. Without the authority to monitor these lands, the NPS will not be able to maintain and improve these lands. Biodiversity may decrease, the amount of open land may decrease, and ecosystems will suffer. As more and more open land gets developed, it is more important than ever to protect these spaces.

One major way you can help us is by contacting your local representatives and urge them to support this bill. Explaining this bill to friends or family and encouraging them to write and support this bill can help. Actively campaigning through distributing flyers or social media posts can also be impactful. In recent years, social media has become important to the world of politics, so using this as a platform is important. Please help us pass this bill into law to ensure protection of this shrinking habitat.
