Education Programs for Youth
Over 40,000 school children attend outdoor education classes in the Santa Monica Mountains each year. For some of them, it is their first encounter with the wonder and beauty of the wild outdoor world. All programs are curriculum-based and further the education goals of the State of California. Studies show learning through such programs can be twice as effective as in-classroom study. It’s easy to understand why these classes are popular with teachers and students alike. Unfortunately due to funding capacity, waiting lists for these classes can run as long as two years.
The Santa Monica Mountains Fund works to bring underserved youth from Los Angeles and Ventura counties to the park by funding the associated costs such as transportation and supplies. Children attend ½ day, day and overnight programs led by rangers and volunteers.
