A number of National Park Service units dispatched firefighters and equipment to the Santa Monica Mountains to battle the Woolsey Fire. In addition to the ones likely familiar to most Californians such as Yosemite National Park, Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks and Lassen Volcanic National Park, mutual aid was also provided by Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, in northwestern Indiana.
A special tip of our hat to Indiana Dunes, which like Santa Monica Mountains NRA, is one of those national parks often classified as a “National Recreation Area”. Like Santa Monica Mountains, it also serves as a “gateway” park to a major american city: In the case of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, that city is Chicago, Illinois; approximately 45 minutes west of the park.
