Our Activities and Events

The Santa Monica Mountains Fund seeks to support, not replace, the park agencies working to preserve and promote the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.  We do things on their behalf, when lack of funds or authority limit their abilities.  For example, while national parks can accept donations, they are not allowed to ask for them; that's something the Fund does on their behalf.  They also are limited in their ability to hold funds for more than one year or earn interest on the money in the interim; those are also where we help.

Our largest project at present, is helping pay for the publication of the OUTDOORS Quarterly Calendar through collected donations.  We also assist in maintaining the calendar's current mailing list.  Without assistance of this sort, this seasonal guide to events and activities throughout the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area might well cease to exist.

Two principal fund-raising events occurred in 2007.  In February, with the generous support and active participation of actor Ricky Schroeder and his wife Andrea, the Fund held PUMA'07, raising funds to support on-going mountain lion research.  In May, the Santa Monica Mountains Fund partnered with the National Park Service to host the third annual Native Plant Fair.  Learn more by clicking the navigation buttons on the left side of this page.

2006 Year in Review
We also work to support better public understanding and involvement of the national recreation area.  In 2006, we made available over five-thousand dollars worth of radio equipment for use by volunteers patrolling the park's many trail.  This year, the Fund was privileged to make it possible for the National Park Service to publish the National Recreation Area's first Year In Review of program highlights and accomplishments in 2006.  You can read the articles appearing in the "Year in Review" on this website by clicking the "Park Projects" button on the top menu.
